Hotel Manager is the head and in charge of a hotel. There are different departments in the hotel, food and beverage, front office, security, housekeeping, IT, sales and marketing, revenue and finance. The person who manages all these departments is either called a Hotel Manager or a General Manager depending on the size of the property. This is mostly the no. 1 position in the hotel, but many large hotels may have Hotel Manager as the number two position as well.
Learn the trade
Beginning of any position in the hotel industry starts with the degree in hotel management where they learn aspects from all the departments and proceed with the chosen one to enhance their career. They always start as an Intern or a junior staff and grow further from there. Many International colleges are now providing degree courses where promotions are faster than before. Most of the people stay for a maximum of 2 years in one position and then move to a different level in the same hotel or to a different company. Which departments lead to the Hotel Manager level?
Mostly professionals from Sales and Marketing and Front Office develop as Hotel Manager or a General Manager in the future, the knowledge of running the operations and sales and marketing is crucial. However, these days professionals from F&B and Housekeeping are also proving to be a great leader. Human Resources is also playing a vital role and participating efficiently in the operations and marketing of a hotel, there is a hope that we would see many future Hotel Managers from the HR as well.

Women hardly joined the hospitality industry 2 decades ago in India, we only heard about air hostesses or receptionist, but women are now leading and managing various Hotel Manager roles in India and abroad. These days, uniforms follow the trend, light-colored jackets, and comfortable shoes are totally in. There are suppliers who design the uniforms based on your needs, it's fashionable and trendy. Being the number one in the hotel, you will have to think about how you are presenting yourself to the staff as well as the guests.
